Early History

Locating resources that go back as far as the beinning of the Tallahassee Numismatic Club, and especially, our predecessor, the Capital City Coin Club, has proven challenging because early versions of the club appear to have had limited activity and minimal record-keeping. The earliest reference appears to be in The Numismatic Scrapbook Magazine, page 114, of 6/25/1968. Thus, we infer that the club was originally founded then. It then appears that in 1974, the club officially changed its name to Tallahassee Numismatic Club.

We will document more of the club's inauguration after it becomes possible to secure physical copies of to this and other periodicals. And as documented below, we know that CCCC was holding annual coin shows beginning in 1974. Based on search results returned by NNP (Newman Numismatic Portal), the publications that our research currently targets includes:

Several years ago, past president Hemanth Setty was in Montana and happened into a pawn shop that had a few coins and numismatic items for sale. Of all the unexpected items one might find, he purchased a wooden nickel dated 1977, and showing the following text:

WOODEN NICKEL
CAPITAL CITY COIN CLUB
3rd ANNUAL SHOW
- OCT. 15-16, 1977

This tangible artifact allows us to infer that the club began annual shows in 1974, and the current iteration of the club considers this to be canonical data.
