Tallahassee Coin Club meeting for August, 2022
Dear Members,
Reminder: the Tallahassee Coin Club meets Wednesday, August 10th, 6-8pm, at:
Leroy Collins Main Library
200 W Park Ave
Tallahassee, FL 32301
(850-606-2665)
Let's meet in the Henderson Room on the second floor, as usual.
We will do Show'n'Tell first, followed by a general discussion.
Last month, we began discussion on how to bring more attention to our small but growing club, and we can continue those discussions this month. I also have some interesting news regarding January's FUN show in Orlando (Jan 5-8).

Dear Members,
Reminder: the Tallahassee Coin Club meets Wednesday, September 14th, 2022, 6-8pm, at:
Leroy Collins Main Library
200 W Park Ave
Tallahassee, FL 32301
(850-606-2665)
Let's meet in the Henderson Room on the second floor, as usual. We will do Show'n'Tell first, followed by a general discussion.
As a member of the club the last four years, August's meeting was by far the best-attended that I have personally seen yet. In fact, if we get a substantial attendance again this month, we will likely begin scheduling the larger room for future meetings. That would allow us to start having raffles for cool prizes, auctions, and presentations, which are just some activities that add a lot of value to a coin club. We can talk about some of these ideas this Wednesday. I am really looking forward to it!

Dear Members,
Reminder: the Tallahassee Coin Club meets the second Wednesday of each month, 6-8pm at:
Leroy Collins Main Library
200 W Park Ave
PROGRAM ROOM A
Tallahassee, FL 32301
(850-606-2665)
Last month, we focused on currency and got to see a wide variety of collecting interests. This month, let's look at large world coins, often called "crowns" and being generally of silver-dollar size. Please bring any you might have, even if they are U.S. "cartwheels"!
We will do Show'n'Tell first, followed by a general discussion.
Let's also discuss how we can promote the coin show that takes place March 25-6. Perhaps some of you will be interested in setting up at the show? The show announcement is attached here as a PDF.

2023
Tallahassee Coin Club meeting for Wednesday, September 13, 2023
Dear Members,
We had a very good meeting last night and discussed a couple of action items.
(1) In October and November, we will meet the second Wednesday of each month, 6-8pm, at the usual place:
Leroy Collins Main Library
200 W Park Ave
PROGRAM ROOM B
Tallahassee, FL 32301
(850-606-2665)
HOWEVER, in December, we are going to meet at a new location! I am giving lots of heads-up so nobody goes to the wrong place. HERE IS WHERE WE MEET IN DECEMBER:
In a stunning turn of events, last month, library personnel sent some club members up to the nether regions on the third floor. Others went to the normal room. Why did this happen? I have no idea.
THIS month, we will meet in the usual place on the FIRST floor, even if it means bribing someone with a few dateless buffalo nickels! I am going to provide an introductory discussion of large cent die-marriages (often called "Sheldon varieties"), with some pointers on how they are attributed. I will bring enough handouts for everyone as part of the discussion. Please bring any early copper you might have on-hand - or anything else numismatic that you'd like to share with your fellow collectors.
We will do the Show'n'Tell first, followed by the presentation.

Dear Members,
WE ARE MEETING, BUT NOT AT THE LIBRARY THIS MONTH. For reasons beyond out control, the Library preempted our meeting and gave the room to someone else. We investigated alternative library venues and didn't find anything suitable. So instead, WE WILL MEET AT NEWK'S EATERY:
Newk's Eatery
1400 Village Square Blvd.
Tallahassee, FL 32312
850-329-7162
Hint: Bring some "lunch money"!
For security reasons, please do not bring any coins to this one-time "special location" as we will have discussions only. NO SHOW'N'TELL OF ACTUAL COINS!
2024
PLEASE NOTE: WE ARE AGAIN MEETING ON MONDAY, not Wednesday this month. That's March 11 in the Henderson room.
Dear Members,
Reminder: the Tallahassee Coin Club meets Wednesday at:
Leroy Collins Main Library
200 W Park Ave
HENDERSON ROOM
Tallahassee, FL 32301
(850-606-2665)
For reasons beyond our control, the library took away our room for Wednesday. Instead, we will again have to meet on Monday (March 11). We will as usual do Show'n'Tell first, followed by a general discussion.
I was recently able to acquire exactly half a roll of 2004-S proof silver Florida quarters. These will be donated to the club for encapsulation by NGC, to be subsequently made available to general club membership first, which is currently our only method for raising funds for club activities (besides raffles). On that note, let's talk about proof coins - bring any you might have to share with the rest of us! And we will have at least one raffle item this month.
DON'T FORGET: The TALPEX Show is this month, March 23/4. I hope you have had time to post a flyer or three in your area.

COIN CLUB MEETING SCHEDULE:
Mon, March 11, Henderson Room
Wed, April 10, Henderson Room
Wed, May 8, Program Room B
Dear Members,
Reminder: the Tallahassee Coin Club meets Wednesday April 10, 2024 at:
Leroy Collins Main Library
200 W Park Ave
Henderson Room
Tallahassee, FL 32301
(850-606-2665)
TALPEX was, in my opinion, a remarkable success and indicates a clear trajectory upward for coin shows in Tallahassee. We are in discussion to have a one-day show at the end of August, open to discussion in this April meeting.
I have very recently had a death in the family, and almost concurrently, my mother has taken on a serious illness. Consequently, it is very likely that I will have to miss our meeting on the tenth. Hemanth would be able to fill in for me, thus demonstrating my deficiencies as club president :) .I suspect there'll be Show'n'Tell first, followed by a general discussion, hopefully including discussion of any of your purchases at the show.

Dear Members,
Reminder: the Tallahassee Coin Club meets Wednesday, May 8, 2024 at:
Leroy Collins Main Library
200 W Park Ave
Program Room "B"
Tallahassee, FL 32301
(850-606-2665)
We have seen an increase in membership recently and are hoping to be able to secure the larger library room as much as possible going forward. As you know, we are still not collecting a membership fee this year but it looks like we will start doing so in January 2025, most likely at $15 for a family's yearly membership.
For this meeting, lets do Show'n'Tell first, followed by a general discussion, and towards the end, we can have a silent auction and raffle. The prize for May's raffle will include multiple items that I am donating to the cause. I will also bring a couple of auction items and hope you will as well. Meanwhile, I am bringing in my incomplete small-cent collection (Flying Eagle, Indian head and Wheat cents) so that we can have a discussion about color designation for copper coins, i.e. "RD", "RB", and "BN". Feel free to bring in your cent collection(s) as well!

In addition to this reminder for Wednesday's club meeting, I have some good news. We made progress late last week on setting up the August 24th coin show and are currently negotiating room rental. I have also drawn up a first draft for dealer application for a table and attached a copy for you to look at. I'll bring a few copies to the club meeting for discussion on Wednesday.

Dear Members,
Reminder: the Tallahassee Coin Club meets on the second Wednesday of each month at:
Leroy Collins Main Library
200 W Park Ave
Henderson Room
Tallahassee, FL 32301
(850-606-2665)
The tornado and bad weather last month caused significant damage for multiple members of the club. As a result, it has proven impossible to make much progress on setting up a one-day show in August. However, we WILL have our usual meeting on the second Wednesday this month.
For this meeting, lets do Show'n'Tell first, followed by a general discussion, and towards the end, we can have a silent auction and TWO raffles, both of which should be outstanding. The first is a Jefferson Nickel collection complete from 1938 - 1948, including all silver War Nickels and quite a few UNC pieces. Second is a 1-ounce prooflike silver round that honors the San Diego Zoo. I will also bring a couple of auction items and hope you will as well.
Let's have a different topic of coins to show off in this meeting: coins that prominently feature zoo animals.

Tallahassee Coin Club meeting for Tuesday, July 16th, 2024, 6-8pm
Dear Members,
PLEASE NOTE THE TUESDAY DATE FOR THIS MONTH'S MEETING. Due to scheduling conflicts, this is a one-off whereby we are meeting on a Tuesday.
Reminder: the Tallahassee Coin Club NORMALLY meets on the second Wednesday of each month at:
Leroy Collins Main Library
200 W Park Ave
Henderson Room
Tallahassee, FL 32301
(850-606-2665)
ROOM A for this July Tuesday meeting, 7/16/2024
ROOM B for August 14
ROOM B for September 11
It's a great problem to have, but with an increasing club membership, we need larger rooms for our meetings. And it's getting more and more difficult for us to get one of the two larger rooms at the library on a consistent basis. We are really looking for a better venue for next year.
During this one-off Tuesday meeting, lets do Show'n'Tell of one-off numismatic items. That would be not a coin (necessarily), but perhaps a token, old coin catalog, weird coin holders, or other oddball acquisitions you might have. We'll follow that with the usual general discussion
Here are some notes on some standards we're going to implement:
Meeting Agenda
1. everyone arrives
2. submit any auction items you have to Hemanth to record
3. show'n'tell (sometimes with a general topic)
4. silent auction items should by now be available for viewing
5. general numismatic discussion
6. raffle one item
7. silent auction
8. door prices or raffle second item
9. conclude meeting
Also a change for placing an item in the auction... simply donate $1 for each item you want to auction off. The dollar is non-refundable, which should encourage submitters to make the reserve low enough to ensure the item will sell, and also relieves us of having to calculation 10% off of oddball bids. And going forward, bids should be in even dollar amounts. All of this is spelled out on new auction item forms as attached.
Finally, we need to greatly ramp up organization and advertising of our August 24 coin show!

Tallahassee Coin Club meeting for Wednesday, August 14, 2024, 6-8pm ROOM B, and FACEBOOK!

Leroy Collins Main Library
200 W Park Ave
ROOM B (for this meeting)
Tallahassee, FL 32301
(850-606-2665)
As we were reminded in our prior meeting, club membership is growing to the point that we need larger rooms for our meetings. For now, we continue to meet at Leroy Collins.
Please consider joining the new FaceBook group for the Tallahassee Numismatic Club. There currently is an existing FaceBook group for Tallahassee Numismatic Club, but unfortunately, it is connected to a member's personal FaceBook page. That brings with it some security concerns. As a result, we have created a new OFFICIAL group for the TNC. Here is a link:
https://www.FaceBook.com/groups/426867376552226
This will be our sole means going forward for advertising club events on FaceBook.
If you do not use FaceBook, don't worry as we continue communicating via eMail, announcements and events for our outstanding membership.
This week, lets do Show'n'Tell of any recent purchases you have made ON-LINE. Or if you don't buy coins online, bring in anything related to the hobby of coin collecting. We'll follow that with the usual general discussion.
Meeting Agenda
1. everyone arrives
2. submit any auction items you have to Hemanth to record
3. show'n'tell (sometimes with a general topic)
4. silent auction items should by now be available for viewing
5. general numismatic discussion
6. raffle one item
7. silent auction
8. door prices or raffle second item
9. conclude meeting
For the auction, the rules are now as follows:
- upon submission of your item, donate $1 for each lot whose opening bid starts at $3 or more
- donate nothing for each lot whose opening bid starts below $3

Hold the pickle, hold the lettuce... and NO COINS?! Tallahassee Coin Club Meeting 10/9/2024
Dear Members,
I wanted to give plenty of advance notice for the October 9th coin club meeting that IS NOT at the Library this month. Instead, we will meet on the second Wednesday (as usual) at:
IHOP Breakfast and Brunch Restaurant
2225 North Monroe Street
Tallahassee, FL 32303
(850-385-0010)
DO NOT BRING COINS OR ANYTHING VALUABLE TO THE MEETING! It will be strictly a discussion meeting whereBY we will not show'n'tell any actual coins, nor will there be an auction. (Of course, you should maybe bring a little money to buy something for dinner.) I will bring a numismatic-related book to mention to everyone and hope you can bring a numismatic-related item as well to share over fries and a soda.
Thanks for making our club the best people for someone to enjoy a hamburger with in Tallahassee!

Dear Members,
Once again, the Library has informed us that we no longer have a room available despite our "reservation". All rooms at all Libraries apparently have been taken over by FEMA as part of the hurricane recovery effort. We are all hopeful that victims of the last two storms can quickly get the help they need.
Instead, we will once again meet Wednesday 6-8pm at:
IHOP
2225 North Monroe:
Tallahassee, FL 32303
This time, since we can get a room to ourselves, let's allow each person to bring up to three numismatic items for Shop'N'Tell and/or for sale. Just be aware of personal security since this is a public area.

I am going to bring a few circulated Franklin half-dollars which, for some reason, somebody decided to have certified. Bring in something which you own that sorta makes no sense... and then try to explain it to the rest of us!

NEW LOCATION - READ CAREFULLY Tallahassee Numismatic Club meeting Wednesday, 9/11 from 6-8
Dear Members,
We were not successful finding a suitable venue for our monthly meetings at no charge to the club, so Hemanth took on the job of finding the next best thing - a good, centrally located venue at a "reasonable" monthly cost. Our new venue from not through the foreseeable future will sound familiar:

Tallahassee Numismatic Club meeting Wednesday, 1/8/2025 from 6-8
Dear Members,
Reminder: the Tallahassee Numismatic Club meets on the second Wednesday 6-8pm each month at:
Tallahassee Senior Center
1400 North Monroe Street
Tallahassee, FL 32303
Hemanth will be presiding because I will not be present as I am Table 765 at the FUN Show from 1/8 - 1/12. In February, I'll provide a rundown of how the show went for me and discuss general observations.
The coin club will have Show'n'Tell of anything you'd care to bring, and that can include coins you'd like to sell to other club members, or in the silent auction. As you know, our new meeting place at the Senior Center makes it possible for members to set up a single coin case of items for sale, although security is entirely your personal responsibility. We'll follow with the usual general discussion.
Meeting Agenda:
1. everyone arrives at 6:00 or after
2. submit any auction items you have to Hemanth to record
3. show'n'tell (sometimes with a general topic)
4. silent auction items should by now be available for viewing
5. general numismatic discussion
6. raffle one item
7. silent auction finishes
8. door prizes or raffle second item

Tallahassee Numismatic Club meeting Wednesday, 2/12/2025 from 6-8
Dear Members,

Tallahassee Senior Center
1400 North Monroe Street
Tallahassee, FL 32303
Did you attend FUN earlier in January? If so, it would be a lot of "fun" is you can share some of your experiences at the show. I had table 765 and from my perspective, it was a highly successful show wherein I was able to both buy and sell a very fair number of coins on all five days of attendance. And several club members from both Tallahassee and Jacksonville - and even my old St. Louis stomping grounds - stopped by to visit!
We'll follow with the usual general discussion and there will be at least two raffle items.
Meeting Agenda:
1. everyone arrives at 6:00pm or after
2. submit any auction items you have to Hemanth to record
3. show'n'tell (sometimes with a general topic)
4. silent auction items available for viewing
5. general numismatic discussion
6. raffle one item
7. silent auction finishes
8. door prizes or raffle second item
9. conclude meeting
Auction Rules:
- upon submission of your item, donate $1 for each lot whose opening bid starts above $3
- donate nothing for each lot whose opening bid starts below $3

Tallahassee Numismatic Club meeting Wednesday, 3/12/2025 from 6-8
Dear Members,
Reminder: the Tallahassee Numismatic Club meets on the second Wednesday 6-8pm each month at:
Tallahassee Senior Center
1400 North Monroe Street
Tallahassee, FL 32303
TALPEX approaches - the stamp and coin show will take place Sat/Sun March 22 (10am-5pm and 23 (10am-3pm). I will be set up with three tables, and in an unusual twist, Hemanth's daughter will be helping me out with the show. It'll be no surprise if she ends up taking home Salesperson of the Month honors!
This being the month of St. Patrick's Day, bring in your luckiest coin for Show'n'Tell. Or if all of your coins are somehow unlucky, then bring them to be auctioned off to the next unfortunate owner! As you know, you may bring anything you'd like to sell outright to other members of the club, or place them in the silent auction. We'll follow with the usual general discussion and there will be at least two raffle items.

In my honest opinion, traffic at this year's TALPEX was not quite as strong as last year, but it was good to see a couple of new dealers set up at the show. I did not find a single coin for any of my personal collections, but did pick up a couple of relatively smaller coins for customers. And of course, the best part of the show was seeing club members in attendance! What was your opinion?

Tallahassee Numismatic Club Coin Announcement: COIN SHOW, July 25-26 (Sat/Sun)
Dear Members,
Finding an optimal two-day window on the calendar proved to be more challenging than expected. We tried very hard to secure a Friday/Saturday commitment, but the Senior Center has so many Fridays pre-committed that we would have had to postpone a show for months. So in lieu of that, we decided there was no option other than to go with a weekend show. Furthermore, they have a Friday event running into the night before our newly-scheduled July 25-26, necessitating setup Saturday morning! So yes, challenges abound for this attempt.
Nevertheless, this is how we TENTATIVELY believe things will fall on the schedule:
SATURDAY JULY 25
- 6am - volunteers (including myself) on-site to set up tables and chairs
#NAME?
- 7am - preferred dealers (i.e. those who helped with setup) start setting up
- 8am - general dealer setup
- 10am - public allowed in
- 4pm - public barred from entering
- 5pm - all dealers must be off the bourse floor
- 5pm - overnight security begins
#NAME?
SUNDAY JULY 26
- 7am - preferred dealers enter (i.e. members of TNCC)
#NAME?
- 9am - public allowed in
- 2pm - public barred from entering
- 3pm - all public must be be off the bourse floor
- 4pm - dealers must all be departed
SECURITY COVERAGE NEEDED
- Saturday 7:30am - 10am
- Saturday 5pm - Sunday 7am
- Sunday 3pm - 4pm
LOCATION
Tallahassee Senior Center
Second Floor
1400 North Monroe Street
Tallahassee, FL 32303
Between now and the show, we have two coin club meetings: June-11 and July-9. Let's plan to iron out details June-11 so that we can begin aggressively advertising the show.
WE NEED DEALERS - BADLY! Hemanth and I already have some contacts, and today, I will contact all the nearest coin clubs to solicit their participation and/or support. And we need to boost our Facebook presence in order to elicit interest in the surrounding community.
Thanks for being an esteemed member of, by far, the best coin club in the Tallahassee area!

For this month's Show'n'Tell, let's forucs on Proof Sets (or Mint Sets). Even folks who do not really collect coins will often want a proof set to commemorate a birth or some other significant lifetime event. Let's see what you have! And we can discuss what's the difference between a proof set, a mint set, and maybe even specimen set. We'll follow with the usual general discussion and there will be at least two raffle items.

Tallahassee Numismatic Club 6/18/2025 : Show's official Supply Dealer + ranking Florida's largest coin shows
Dear Members,
Bob Bandino has officially signed on to set up at out coin show July 26-7, and is designated as the shows Official Supply Dealer. If you are looking for a coin folder, 2x2s, a loupe, or slab boxes, Bob is your guy. I can forward his contact information to you upon request.
Also, he mentioned something useful - ranking the top shows in Florida by presence:
#1 FUN/January
#2 FUN/July
#3 Collectorama
#4 Jacksonville
#5 Citrus County
. . . .
#7384 Tallahassee
As you can see, we as a club have some catching up to do (although I only estimated Tallahassee's ranking - it might be a little higher by the end of July).
Bob has also kindly distributed a significant number of flyers to potential dealers and attendees, so please show your support for his efforts by purchasing from him during the show (something I certainly intend to do).
We also have a couple of club members not feeling their best these days so let's keep them in our thoughts and prayers.

Ron-John's Coins and Currency
managed by John Daar and Ron Yeckring of Gainesville
There will be another announcement related to the club, but you must attend in person to receive that update.
I look forward to seeing you all at the meeting in about three hours!

As announced yesterday, we are on CoinZip!
Coin Show listed: https://www.coinzip.com/index.php?state=FL
Coin Club also listed: https://www.coinzip.com/coinClubs.php?state=FL
In fact, we have the top spot on the coin club list by virtue of being the latest one to sign up! If you pore over the list, you'll notice that we are indeed the only club within a wide range of Tallahassee.
TOMORROW IS FINAL CALL FOR CLUB MEMBERS TO COMMIT TO SETTING UP AT THE TWO-DAY SHOW. I will also have another important, but currently "secret" announcement to share only with members who attend the meeting in person.

Please show your appreciation by checking out the U.S. coins that Dennis will have for sale at the show! For this month's Show'n'Tell, let's look at 18th century coins, if you have them - U.S. or World. I will bring in a couple from my inventory. We'll follow with the usual general discussion and there will be at least two raffle items.

26-Jul-25
The Tallahassee Numismatic Club held a very small, but unexpectedly successful coin show at the Senior Center, 1400 North Monroe, July 26-27. I'll give a few observations:
(1) With only some six weeks to advertise the show and get dealers signed up, we more than doubled our dealer presence, and by our unofficial tally, had ten times the amount of attendance as last year. Advertising emphasized the opportunity for sellers to collect offers from multiple dealers, and the effect was apparent from dealer comments, as ALL observed an unusually high percentage of attendees coming in with items to sell.
(2) My total sales were about $8000 -- indicative of a very small show -- but nearly everything I sold was non-bullion with one notable exception. I sold a roll of "pretty Mercury dimes" grading AU-58 - UNC, for $425. Interestingly, in terms of dollars, most of my sales were World coins although my specialty is U.S. early type. But then again, of my $6000 in world coin sales, $5000 of that was to a single buyer who picked up three gold pieces that I had priced VERY strongly.
(3) My total purchases were about $1500. That said, being President of the club and bourse chairman, I had the highest-advantage table and intentionally diflected the vast majority of possible purchases in order to give other dealers ample opportunity to make good deals. I could have easily quadrupled my purchases otherwise. For example, I turned away a sizable 90% deal, and saw it being purchased not fifteen minutes later by another dealer.
(4) We had two dealers walking the floor and given the obvious success of our little show, they immediately expressed virtual commitment on-the-spot for next year's show. Our plan is to limit growth to five additional dealers in 2026.
(5) My favorite purchase is depicted below although the pictures are sadly deficient in showing how nice this Jefferson Nickel collection really is. I will be upgrading several pieces in my personal sets with some of these beauties!
